In order to survive, the legendary peasant leader Nils Dacke put himself at the head of a totally undermanned army, which, however, emerged victorious from the confrontation with the superior power with a regionally proverbial “Dacke spirit”.Īs a result, in the 17th century, the provincial boundaries that are still valid today were established. However, trade links with the Danes were almost vital for the Smålanders. King Gustav Vasa moved his government headquarters to far away Stockholm in the 16th century and drastically forbade trade with the Kingdom of Denmark. The three kingdomsįor a very long time Småland existed autonomously between Denmark and Sweden. In Lindgren’s honor, and not least because Sweden is such a child-friendly country, Vimmerby has a large amusement park in addition to an idyllic vacation village with an adjacent camping site: Astrid Lindgren’s Värld. Sweden’s national writer spent her entire childhood here.
